Why PwC can not walk out now

December 7, 2009 by Narayana

This is in response to Indian express reporting that CBI has given clean chit to PwC on Satyam scam.

PwC can not take the position that it was not aware of what its Lovelock and Lewes arm was doing. Here are the reasons.
1. PwC and Lovelock & Lewes are same — as for as employee perception goes
I worked for PwC in late 90’s. We were a bunch from IIM IITs and were interviewed in campus for PwC but some of us ended up working from Lovelock & Lewes. Offer letter was from PwC! Email id of Lovelock & Lewes employees too ended in pwcglobal.com.
2. PwC and Lovelock & Lewes are same – as for as management control goes
The Lovelock and Lewes employees reported to a PwC partner!!. PwC had all the control. There was really no distinction between Price Waterhouse, Coopers & Lybrand and Lovelock and Lewes which made up the firm PwC.
3. PwC and Lovelock & Lewes are same – they share the building ; computer and network infrastructure
4. Why was PwC silent when the auditors signed on behalf of PwC all these years!! I have seen many presentations where PwC listed Satyam as one of its clients. If PwC and Lovelock & Lewes are different why did PwC use Satyam name in its client list.
5. On Januar y 8, 2009, the day after the fraud was revealed, PwC issued an email stating that “(the audits were conducted by Price Waterhouse in accordance with applicable auditing standards and were supported by appropriate audit evidence.” – Why did not PwC state that Satyam was not its client at that time!!!!
6. Six days later, Sat yam fired PwC as its auditor. That same day, PwC informed Satyam’s new board of directors that “(PwC’sJ opinions on (Satyam’s financial statements may be rendered inaccurate and uneliable. . . .” It wrote: “We wish to advise that Sat yam should promptly notify any person or entity that is known to be relying upon our audit report that our audit opinion should no longer be relied upon.” In other words, PwC anounced, that contrar to its public statements the week prior, its audits had been unreliable. Why did PwC make that statement if Lovelock and Lewes were to be blamed
7. After the fallout; PwC global head rushed to India – If PwC was not involved why did they rush to India?

Other notable things on how shady these people are as follows.
For Satyam’s audit – Auditors received 667% times the compensation paid by other software industry peers. Trace that money trail you will see that buck stops in the PwC coffer. This will put a nail on the coffin. If money stopped at PwC it will have a hard time explaining why that money came to PwC if it did not have control. Also when you are getting paid six and half times the market rate it is obvious that auditors were getting bribed!!!!!

The modus operandi of PwC cons was same in Global Trust Bank scam. Global Trust Bank too had PwC as auditor and same con professor Krishna Pulepu from HBS on board of director. After the scam both of them vanished. And PwC gave exact ruse to get itself cleared.!!!!!! There is a clear pattern here and I am not sure why CBI did not compare this scam to GTB scam!!!

Suggestions to Manmohan Singh

November 30, 2008 by Narayana

Dear Prime Minister,

If you have any desire to fight terrorism here are some of the suggestions.

Have a nationwide number for emergency response, similar to 911 in US. The control center should be equipped to detect the location of the caller and route the call to nearest fire/police and other law enforcement. If this number was effective the incident on Kuber would have got reported and terrorists could have been stopped in the sea.

Introduce two year mandatory military training for Indian youth. It will instill sense of command in them. Right now all that they do is stand on the sides and clap for commandos. Mandatory military training has helped Israel respond to persistent Islamic terrorists.

Introduce CCTV cameras for every 500 mt in the city like that is done in London. In a TV spoof, a suspicious looking alien on the street of London is responded in minutes by London Police.

Start a central agency like FBI in India with purely using new recruits, no deputations please. The whole Mumbai episode has exposed the serious flaws in policing such as listed below.

Conduct an investigation and summarily dismiss the officials who bungled resulted in

  • Not being able to wage a night warfare on the terrorists, Why was this not planned?
  • Not being able to provide bullet proof vests for the commandos
  • Not being able to provide simultaneous attack on Taj terrorists. ( there was considerable time delay between the heli dropping and the first bang on the building as seen on TV )
  • Not being able to instruct commandos to show their face on TV
  • Not being able to cordon off the entire area, even after two days
  • Not being able to provide detailed maps of Taj for security agencies? Which town plan agency gave permission to that hotel?
  • You decide!!

How Revlon got sold in Rural India

    November 8, 2008 by Narayana

    Audio

I was surprised, that washing machines , are used to blend yogurt smoothies in India. When they have such population, blenders may not work!!!.

However , I know another story which is equally incredulous. This happened when I worked as an intern, at Revlon’s India office. Revlon wanted to introduce hair color in India and after careful market studies we decided to test two colors. Black and Brown. Almost all the Indians have black as their hair color and hence introducing brown was strongly opposed by the team. However since we wanted to test the reaction of India to an unnatural hair color we decided to keep brown option open. I was asked to lead the test market for brown color. I somehow felt that I was being setup for failure!!. The project given to me was to decide which shade of brown was the best shade to market. I created three shades. Dark brown like chocolate, a medium shade of brown that looked like dry leaves and yes.. a blond color. My logic in creating blond color was that it may get some corporate sponsors in Bangalore, particularly in a firm that encouraged employees to talk and behave like mainstream Americans. So I stuck to my shades and got the approval to test these three shades of brown on technology crowd in a software company.
We took 300 packs each of these three shades, dark brown, light brown and blond colors and went to technology campus of the test company. I will keep the name of the company a secret and call it Sikkapatai Important Company. We set up our counter near Domino pizza outlet inside the food court at the company and waited for the response. The first week we had a sale of 2 packs of chocolate brown and lo and behold! three packs of blond color!!. This was unusual and was proving my theory that technology crowd at Sikkapatai Important Company have secret desire to become blonds. However, my manager discounted this and said may be the blond colors were bought by some of the many expatriates working for the company. Next week we sold 12 packs of blond color!!. May be more expatriates were rushing in, to buy the shade that was not traditionally available in India, said my manager!!. Next week, I left for Delhi to finish my project and head back to America. When I reached Delhi the test market data for that week was in my inbox. We had sold 286 boxes of blonde color and we were out of stock midway between our test market study!!. Test report also said the employees who were buying were not expatriates!! Revlon had to fedex blond shades from America to replenish test market stock and next week we sold 400 cases of blond color.
Next week we took off to Mumbai to see Ganesha festival. After the Ganesha festival suddenly the demand vanished. We also did not see the employees sporting their new hair color. Why they bought the color but were not using it, was a mystery! The sixth week I had to finish the study and submit the report. So, I collected the data from earlier weeks and analyzed it. Off the 300 boxes sold from the first batch , 280 had been bought by two individuals from Rural part of the state. I remember the name of their town as Channapattana. I was surprised that two individuals bought so much of hair color. I happened to get an appointment with one of them, the other had gone to U S on a short assignment. Both had the same story.

The first individual belonged to an agricultural family and he was first one in his family who tried something else other than agriculture. He seemed very uncomfortable interacting with a white woman like me. I was curious to know what he did with hair color? He said they were cattle merchants and bought and sold cows in Channapattana Cattle fair during the month when Ganesha festival is held. He explained that blond cattle fetched more money than other colored cattle!!. He also explained that cattle can be dyed using hair color and buffaloes are regularly colored to pitch black to get premium prices. He hit upon an idea to use the blond color on cows because cows are liked if they are blond colored!!! So his family bought colored cattle in the fair and colored them blond and sold them at premium!!!

Enclosed: Images of a cow salon in Channapattana where such cow laundering is done. The colored cow near the salon door is yet to get the color treatment. The cow standing in front is a happy customer after the color treatment. The tanks contain Revlon blond solution. Image courtesy: Our undercover operators in Sikkapatte Important Company
